Port Perry, ON
January 30th, 2026 – Theatre on the Ridge is going back on the road again this March Break, bringing Mark Crawford’s imaginative and thoughtful play, Boys, Girls and Other Mythological Creatures, to five Durham Libraries. The company’s last March Break touring production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was extremely popular and Theatre on the Ridge is pleased to present another family production with the support of a Community One Foundation Rainbow Grant. This support has made it possible to offer the performances through the libraries on a Pay What You May basis.
Boys, Girls, and Other Mythological Creatures is a thoughtful and hilarious play about our ability to transform as told through the eyes of Simon, Abby and Zach. Deep in Simon’s basement, there is a secret world of imagination and adventure. When his new friend Abby comes over after school to work on a class assignment, Simon steers their work toward creating a play. However, Simon’s older brother, Zach, is uneasy with their play-acting and dressing up.
As the three characters struggle through their conflicts, they improvise a fairy tale about a magic prince, an evil king, a brave young girl, and a fire-breathing dragon who’s getting more real by the minute. Can Abigail save Princess Simone from the Tower of Light? Will Zach succeed in turning his brother back into being a boy once and for all? And will Simon overcome fear and finally become their true self?
Directed by Carey Nicholson and performed by an exuberant and talented cast – Cooper Bilton, Hannah Forest Briand and Michael Williamson – Boys, Girls and Other Mythological Creatures will travel across Durham to libraries in Ajax, Oshawa, Scugog, Sunderland and Whitby, with performances from March 16 – 21. Please check the Theatre on the Ridge website or the specific library for exact performance day and time.
Mark Crawford, one of Canada’s most notable comedy playwrights, has written a family play that entertains and engages. It also creates an opportunity for observation and discussion on identity, expectation and roles for both boys, girls and everyone.
The production runs approximately one hour, is suitable for elementary school age and older audiences and contains themes of fantasy and gender identity.
