Connecting Through Theatre

Introducing: The Connecting Card For Tuesday Morning Activities!

Starting October 2025, there will be a fee for weekly classes and we introduce the Connecting Card for Tuesday morning programming. Purchase the card that works for you!

It’s easy to join us once, twice or for all 32 weeks of Tuesday mornings with Connecting
Through Theatre weekly classes.

Weekly Activities Fee structure:

Drop-in single class = $20.00
Five-class card = $90.00
Ten-class card = $170.00
Fifteen-class card = $250.00

Additional specialty workshops and Audience 101 excursions will be offered individually with
their own payment options.

We accept cash, credit card…and volunteer hours!

We recognize that for some, paying cash is not always a viable option. In the spirit of
accessibility and strengthening connections, we’re introducing a Connecting Through
Volunteerism Exchange option for those who wish to redeem Theatre on the Ridge volunteer
service hours for a portion of their program activities.

Scene Study

Do you marvel at the ability of your favourite actors to create interesting and complex characters, sometimes even from the most unassuming script? Are you curious about the process of how they go from words on a page to characters that seem so genuine and original?

We explore short scenes, and discuss and try out some of the techniques actors employ to present what you ultimately see on stage, in films, and on TV. The classes are free, informal, and don’t require any previous acting experience. You can just come to one, or as many as you please. Come out and meet some new people, learn something new, and have a laugh or two!

1st Read

Read plays, dig into text and gain insight into live theatre creative and production processes.

Our First Read Club invites you to the production table with Theatre on the Ridge artistic staff and artists. Each session will feature a new play to be read aloud followed by creative discussion and conversation.

This Month’s Read: The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion by Stephen Massicotte

Suffering the aftermath of the Great War, and foreseeing the dawning of new ones, the Oxford Roof Climbers, the Benevolent Order of, lay siege to a sleepy university town. The members include Colonel T. E. Lawrence (of Arabia) and poet, Captain Robert Graves.

A stand against stands, a dare to end all daring, a doing that protests doings; the two haunted men—armed with a talent for practical jokes—grasp at love and dare to imagine a new world.

Animated Acting

Get your acting off the page and out of your head with some animated acting!
Acting skills are not only good for your brain, they’re good for your physical well-being and, by
engaging your body more, you’ll sharpen your mind, wake up your body and create a stronger
connection between the two. Onstage, you’ll also create a stronger connection with your script
and your scene partners.

Feel good, have fun and refresh your approach to stagecraft with un-intimidating theatre games,
vocal warm ups and acting exercises that lead to discoveries on and off stage. Animated Acting
is the perfect complement to our scene study classes and 1 St Read Club. No previous acting
experience required. Attend when you can.

Word Playwriting Lab

It all begins with the playwright! Spend some time exploring a variety of playwriting and creative exercises designed to flex your own creative voice muscles. Whether you’ve done any kind creative writing before or are just curious about how playwrights create their work, our Wordplay Lab is the opportunity to learn, share and make time to write. The emphasis of Wordplay is on writing, not creating a play.

Writing of any kind is an excellent form of self-expression and can be part of anyone’s well-
being practice. Time and group comfort levels permitting each session, we’ll read personal
works in progress and discuss plays and playwrights. No previous writing or acting experience
required. Attend when you can!

Let’s Do Lunch – 1st Tuesday of the Month

On the first Tuesday of each month, First Read Club sessions will continue at the Scugog
Memorial Public Library. Take both a Scene Study class AND a First Read Club session and join
our new monthly potluck lunch. These lunches are a way for participants to connect on a new
level. Sharing food, traditions, customs and views over a delicious meal, builds friendships and
support. New? Bring your favourite dish to share. Friends already? Bring something new and
fun to share. Note that your own brown bag lunch is okay too.

Connecting Through Volunteer Time Exchange

Every two hours of volunteer time can be redeemed for one weekly Connecting Through Theatre Activity @ only $5.00.

Four hours of volunteer time will offset the cost of specialty workshops by 50% of the workshop
fee.

Volunteering with us can range from weekly behind the scenes collection maintenance,
occasional Front of House assistance or promo/marketing assistance to Connecting Through
Theatre activity set up and one time only event support.
