Theatre on the Ridge brings two unique stories to the stage for Black History Month
The Story of Samuel Stout – Next Stage, February 10 & 11
The Adventures of the Soul Sistas, February 25
This February, Theatre on the Ridge recognizes Black History Month with two unique theatre events – a musical staged reading of The Story of Samuel Stout by Uju Umenyi and a staged book reading of Newton Vanriel’s new children’s book, The Adventures of the Soul Sistas. Both events take place at the Port Perry Anglican Church of the Ascension, 266 North St. Port Perry.
In the Story of Samuel Stout – Next Stage, the journey towards a full production of this compelling new play by Uju Umenyi continues. Audiences will remember the powerful first public presentation last September during Ontario Culture Days. Theatre on the Ridge now brings Ms. Umenyi, and musical director, Christopher Lucas together for a second workshop to explore the role of music in the play, and in the life of Samuel Stout, Port Perry’s first Black resident. The week long workshop will culminate in two public staged readings – Friday, February 10 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, February 11 at 2 pm. Tickets are $25 each and now available at www.theatreontheridge.ca.
On February 25th at 2 pm, Theatre on the Ridge presents The Adventures of the Soul Sistas by Durham author Newton Vanriel. Join author Vanriel and actors Audra Gray (The Drowning Girls) and Amanda Jane Smith (Cottagers and Indians) for a very special reading of this delightful new bestselling book for children. The Adventures of the Soul Sistas celebrates diversity and the true meaning of family through the eyes of two wonderful superheroes, Charm and Dawn. Adopted at birth and soul sistas from the heart, Charm and Dawn share everything and have the best adventures on their Spirit family farm.
Admission is Pay What You May (suggested $5/person) at the door. No advance tickets. Signed copies of The Adventures of the Soul Sistas will be also available for purchase. More details available at www.theatreontheridge.ca.
