Sharing the Story of Samuel Stout:
An Encore Presentation

with Uju Umenyi and Carey Nicholson

Thursday, February 22, 6:30 pm
Scugog Arts Space
175B Queen St., Port Perry
(behind Cycle Life)

Our recognition of Black History Month began earlier this month at Greenbank United Church, with a presentation by playwright Uju Umenyi and artistic director, Carey Nicholson, honouring the life of Samuel Stout, Port Perry’s first Black resident. We are pleased to offer an encore of this extremely well received presentation on Thursday, February 22 at the Scugog Arts Space.

Uju Umenyi is an emerging writer, actor and playwright who challenged herself to explore the life and times of Samuel Stout. Her deep dive drew her to local historians and members of the Ontario Black History Society who helped build the framework to understand how isolating this time would have been for Samuel in the mid-1800s.
As part of her collaboration with Theatre On The Ridge, Uju breathed life into these stories, and in this presentation, both Uju and Carey share a glimpse into the process of reintroducing Samuel to the communities of Scugog.

There is no cost to attend; however, donations to support the ongoing development of this project will be gratefully received.
